It’s an organizational strategy.

For years, organizations have measured success by what people know about them: brand awareness, impressions, media coverage, and website traffic. And although these metrics still matter, they are no longer enough. Today’s business environment demands something more meaningful: influence.

That was one of the clearest takeaways from the Public Relations Global Network’s latest global Influence Insights Survey. Leaders around the world overwhelmingly agree that influence is critical to achieving organizational goals, and most believe its importance is only increasing.

However, many admit they are not as effective as they want to be in building and sustaining influence. That disconnect should serve as a wake-up call that influence is no longer a communications metric, but a business imperative that deserves the same level of strategic attention as finance, operations and customer experience.

One of the biggest misconceptions organizations continue to make is believing that influence belongs solely to the communications or marketing department. In reality, every interaction shapes how an organization is perceived. Employees, customer service representatives, executives, board members, community partners and even customers themselves all contribute to a brand’s credibility. Every conversation, social media post, customer review and community engagement opportunity either strengthens or weakens trust.

This means leaders need to think differently. Influence is not something that can be delegated to a single department or measured only by media coverage. It should be woven into business strategy, leadership development, employee engagement and customer experience. Organizations that consistently earn trust do so because their values are reflected across every touchpoint, not simply because they launched a successful campaign. Communications professionals can help guide that strategy, but lasting influence is built by the entire organization.

Trust remains the foundation of influence, and trust is earned over time. It grows when organizations consistently deliver on their promises, communicate transparently and empower employees to become credible ambassadors. Leaders often say their people are their greatest asset, yet many stop short of equipping them to confidently represent the organization. That’s a missed opportunity. Employees are among the most trusted voices an organization has, and their influence extends far beyond the office walls.

The most successful organizations in the years ahead will be those that view influence as something they intentionally cultivate every day. They will invest in strong leadership, empower employees, embrace technology thoughtfully and remain committed to authentic relationships with the people they serve. Influence is not a destination or a campaign with a finish line. It is an ongoing commitment to building trust, creating value and earning the confidence of those who matter most. Organizations that understand that won’t simply be better communicators. They’ll be better businesses.

If you want to hear more about how brand influence can be achieved, maintained or amplified, listen to this week’s episode of the PRGN Presents podcast series, where as an exception, I am the guest and walk you through what influence holds for brands and communicators in today’s world.

For years, organizations have measured success by what people know about them: brand awareness, impressions, media coverage, and website traffic.
