CPMC Sutter Health’s new Hospital in San Francisco – built from the ground up – was on track to open in early 2019. The site promised to be the most seismically safe hospital in the West, and also provided needed emergency room, obstetrics and surgical services to the city’s downtown area. Sutter Health hired LCI to promote the opening of San Francisco’s first new downtown hospital in decades.

Strategies

LCI positioned CPMC Van Ness as the linchpin in the revitalization of San Francisco’s Van Ness Avenue corridor. The new hospital would bring jobs, services and new life to residents and a neighborhood that had been largely ignored. The hospital featured a first-of-its-kind-in-the-U.S. viscous wall damper system designed to withstand earthquake impact. Among other approaches, LCI’s PR campaign showcased the dampers to all media; promoted a community open house, allowing neighbors to see the modern, luxurious new facility and get to know some of the practitioners they’d have access to as their local medical professionals; and spotlighted “Patient Move Day” from the old hospital, which included a reporter acting as a patient for an inside perspective. The ribbon cutting featured San Francisco Mayor London Breed and local dignitaries.

Results

Extensive media coverage of the opening included: MSN (national), San Francisco Chronicle, KGO Radio, KCBS Radio, KTVU-TV, KPIX-TV, KRON-TV, KGO-TV, Sfist, San Francisco Magazine, Bay City News, Becker’s Hospital Review, San Francisco Business Times, San Francisco Examiner, BizNow, Hoodline, Bay Area Parent, Haute Living, Healthcare Facilities Today, Marina Times, SF Gate and more. The hospital opened to near-capacity, fulfilling the ultimate goal of the campaign.
